Tell Your Love Story – How to be Intentional about Decorating your Home
Our homes should tell a story of our lives and those we love most. Below are my tips for becoming intentional when selecting artwork for your home so that your space can easily reflect the story of who you are.
Keep the Bedroom to Just You and Your Partner
When I first became a mom, I remember reading somewhere that the best way to show your children stability, love, and security is through loving your spouse well. You can love and hug and kiss your kids all you want, but the very best way to show them security is to model the behavior, and that begins with you and your partner. That being said, I am very intentional when decorating our bedroom by using only pictures and mementos of me and my husband. We have wedding pictures, anniversary pictures, our vows, and a couple’s journal all spread throughout our room to tell the story of our love.
Forget the trends
Ignore what is trending. If you purchase items simply because your favorite blogger has them in her home, it’s reflective of her story and taste, not yours. Look for inspiration in other’s homes, but just don’t forget to make it your own.
Incorporate your Beliefs Where Possible
This doesn’t have to necessarily be religious. Even quotes from famous authors or movies are excellent to sprinkle throughout the home. This doesn’t only have to be in the way of wall art. Expand your thinking to little quotes on nightstands or books sitting on end tables.
Select a Common Color Palette Throughout
Before printing family pictures for my walls or frames, I edit all my pictures with the same editing technique in order to create a cohesive look throughout my home. If you are unsure of how to edit your photos, there are great tutorials online, or turn to a classic black and white print for a clean and sophisticated look.
Purchase or Create Artwork that Shares your Unique Story
This is my favorite way to personalize a home. Bring in really unique pieces that are specific to only you and your family. For example, hang your first dance song lyrics or frame an old note from your spouse. I also love the idea of hanging a map from your favorite city, or a picture of the night sky from a memorable date in your life. I have included some of my favorite finds below that you can shop for your home.
01. The Night Sky
04. Peardrop Prints
05. Framed Florals
