01. Don’t get too lengthy
Keep your vows two to three minutes only.
02. Don’t use too many quotes
One quote or a song lyric are a great way to compliment your ideas, but do not overload your vows with words or quotes from others. These promises should come from you.
03. Don’t wing it
Just don’t do it. Take the time to be prepared. You may think you know what you want to say, but guaranteed, nerves will get the better of you and this is just a recipe for disaster.
04. Lean on too much humor
A few one liners to liven up your vows are great. They keep the moment light hearted and fun, just don’t overdo it.
05. Avoiding eye contact with your partner
It’s a nerve wracking moment, but be sure to look up and into your partner’s eyes. This should be an intimate, heartfelt moment for the two of you.
06. Rushing through
Take a deep breath and slow down. Practice your vows ahead of time so you get comfortable with the words and you won’t be as inclined to zip through once the ceremony begins.
07. Forgetting the tissues
You might cry. Don’t forget to bring a hanky so your makeup stays put!
08. Getting too personal
Don’t share every intimate story. Only mention the big stuff. How your life has changed for the better, maybe even the moment you knew this person was the one you would spend your life with. Outside of that, it’s not time to get personal; take a stroll down memory lane on your honeymoon.
09. Forgetting your vows
Yep, not all that uncommon, unfortunately. It’s a good idea to have a copy of your vows and leave it with your maid of honor, best man, or another designated (responsible) person just in case. It’s just one less thing for you to worry about on the big day!
